Project Management Institute (PMI)

The Project Management Institute (PMI) is a nonprofit organization established in 1969 in the United States that has developed globally recognized professional standards in project program and portfolio management. PMI serves as a reference point for project professionals by providing standards training publications certifications and events to ensure that interdisciplinary project management practices are conducted within a professional framework.

The founders of the Project Management Institute include James Snyder Eric Jenett Gordon Davis E.A. “Ned” Engman and Susan C. Gallagher. The first official meeting took place on 9 October 1969 at the Georgia Institute of Technology where the establishment of PMI was formally confirmed.

PMI’s early leaders worked together believing in the importance of sharing project planning and scheduling practices. Initially they considered naming the organization “The American Planning and Scheduling Society” but recognizing that their activities had a broader scope the founders adopted the name “Project Management Institute”.

Among the founders Eric Jenett symbolized the beginning of PMI’s certification program by obtaining the first Project Management Professional (PMP)® certification in 1984. This program aims to promote professionalism and standards in project management.

PMI’s most renowned publication the A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide) defines the fundamental knowledge areas application principles and performance domains of project management. As of the seventh edition the PMBOK® Guide has transitioned from a process-based approach to a principle-based framework aiming to enhance applicability in dynamic and uncertain environments. In this context it emphasizes that projects must produce not only outputs but also strategic outcomes.

On the other hand the publication titled The Standard for Risk Management in Portfolios Programs and Projects contributes to the corporate risk perspective by addressing risk management not only at the project level but also at the portfolio and program levels. This standard recommends the systematic identification analysis and alignment of risk with strategic objectives.
